Trainee position: Large pilot research to remove nutrients, heavy metals and other priority (hazardous) substances from Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) effluent.

In near future, water authorities are obligated to achieve more stringent discharge limits. The goal is to ensure a good quality of the surface water and groundwater in Europe by the year 2015, described as ‘good ecological quality’. Therefore the quality of effluent of WWTPs has to satisfy the maximum allowed concentrations for nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals and other priority (hazardous) substances. The objective of the project is to gain knowledge and experience with removal of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), suspended matter, heavy metals and some priority (hazardous) substances from WWTP effluent. Various post-treatment techniques are tested and further optimised in a long term pilot scale study. Below a schematic overview of the pilot plant with all the treatment techniques under investigation is shown.

The practical research is highly innovative for the water sector. A lot of practical experience is gained with different techniques. During the work placement you become acquainted with the Dutch waste water sector. The research is done in co-operation with Witteveen+Bos Consulting Engineers, Waternet (formerly known as Water Management and Sewage Service) and the Delft University of Technology. The activities will be at the WWTP Horstermeer for the most part. The WWTP Horstermeer can be found between Amsterdam and Hilversum and is located in a beautiful ecological environment.
